Greenmantle continues the thrilling adventures of Richard Hannay, hero of The Thirty-Nine Steps. Set during the First World War, it tells of a German attempt to raise the whole of Islam in support of Turkey, thus defeating Russia on the Eastern front and turning the course of the war. Accompanied by his three well-known companions – Sandy Arbuthnot, John Blenkiron and Peter Pienaar – and tasked with unravelling a mysterious message, Hannay travels through Germany and the Middle East searching for the elusive religious leader “Greenmantle”.

John Buchan - John Buchan, Baron Tweedsmuir, was a Scottish diplomat, barrister, journalist, historian, poet and novelist. He wrote adventure novels, short-story collections and biographies. His passion for the Scottish countryside is reflected in much of his writing. Buchan's adventure stories are high in romance and are peopled by a large cast of characters. Richard Hannay, Dickson McCunn and Sir Edward Leithen are three that reappear several times. Alfred Hitchcock adapted his most famous book The Thirty-Nine Steps for screen, although professed to preferring Greenmantle as a book.

James Buchan - James Buchan is a novelist and journalist and the grandson of John Buchan.
